Do Christians Do “Good Things” Because God Threatens Them With Hell If They Don’t? Finding Jesus in Compassion

An excerpt from the beginning:

One of the many misconceptions about Christianity is that Christians are compelled to do good works out of fear of hell if they don’t; that our relationship with God is one of being a fearful subject to an all-powerful being who not only arbitrarily demands we do good things for each other, but at the exact same time threatens us with ultimate punishment if we don’t; that God in fact bullies us into doing good.

We’re going to look at two things today: First, we’re going to look at what “good” is and use rational thinking to see if the view that Christians are bullied by the Bible into doing good makes much sense. Second, we’re going to look at what the bible teaches us about compassion.
